I'm not saying I'm super tidy, but when I'm writing, I really don't end up with paint or ink everywhere. I fill my pen with a brush so that it only goes behind the nib - this gives me enough to write several words (or several lines with a smaller nib) before filling it again.
I find that moving to fill the pen - although it's only a little movement - stops me "setting" in place and saves sore shoulders / neck.
On a recent commission, I wrote the 90 names on a family tree in one sitting - and the photos show the state of my nib when I finished.
So if you're getting ink or paint everywhere and you don't like it - there is another way!
