Italic lesson 5
Well - you've 26 lower case letters to play with!
You’ll probably want to use capitals, punctuation and numbers too. The full learning of these is beyond the scope of this lesson, but if you stick with your 40 degree pen angle and write carefully, you should get capitals and numbers that work well with your italic letters.
A good guideline is to make capitals and numbers taller than the x height but shorter than a letter with an ascender (so somewhere between an n and an h is great).
Your final challenge is to find something you’d like write, and do so!
Think about how to place it on the page. You’re aiming for a piece that looks balanced and interesting, so that your audience will be tempted to cross the room to read it, and will be impressed at the evenness when they do so.
Consider:
Margins – good margins on all sides of the lettering help make the work look balanced. The bigger the margins, the more “valuable” the lettering looks.
Colour – maybe you want to stray from black on white. Maybe you want to try several colours.
Contrast – maybe you’ll use a bigger pen to emphasise a key phrase, or write the title.
When you’re ready, upload your piece – I’m really looking forward to seeing what you choose!
